Usos de la novela histórica en el siglo XIX mexicano Público Deposited
The present work focuses on the detailed analysis of some of the best well known historical novels of the Mexican XIX Century, and seeks to answer two main questions: How is temporality experienced in these texts? And, what is the difference between history and literature within a genre that came to grow slowly during this period? While going through these questions the dissertation aims to make a historical analysis of the genre (historical novel), this is, to tell a story that allows to observe how the historical novel was used by its ‘original’ readers. In order to achieve this, the present work shows that the contract of reading that we usually agree upon such texts was created at the end of the XIX Century and the beginning of the XX, and that, thus, our reading of the genre has been very unhistorical. Building up from this diagnosis and from the analysis of the questions described (the experience of temporality and the relationship between history and literature), this thesis proposes the existence of three different periods that frame the formal and pragmatic characteristics which defined the genre of historical novel during the Mexican XIX Century. Finally, this is a historical research that reflects upon some of the theoretical and methodological problems that historiography faces in our time.
El presente trabajo se concentra en el análisis detallado de algunas de las novelas históricas más conocidas del siglo XIX mexicano con el fin de observar en ellas dos temáticas centrales: ¿Cuál es la experiencia de la temporalidad que los textos presentan o exhiben? y ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre historia y literatura al interior de un género que fue conformándose lenta y paulatinamente a lo largo de dicho periodo? Al trabajar estas dos problemáticas la tesis pretende historizar el género novela histórica, es decir se interesa por contar una historia que permita observar la manera en que la novela histórica fue usada por sus lectores “originales”. Para conseguir dicho objetivo el trabajo muestra que el contrato de lectura que usualmente utilizamos para acercarnos a dichos textos fue creado a finales del siglo XIX e inicios del XX, y que, por lo mismo, nuestra lectura del género ha sido plenamente ahistórica. A partir de dicho diagnóstico y del análisis de los dos temas descritos con anterioridad (la experiencia de la temporalidad y la relación entre la historia y la literatura) la tesis propone la existencia de tres periodos diferentes que enmarcan las características formales y pragmáticas que definieron al género novela histórica durante el siglo XIX mexicano. Finalmente, el trabajo se propone como una investigación histórica que nos permita reflexionar sobre algunos de los problemas teóricos y metodológicos que enfrenta la historiografía en nuestros tiempos.
